The evening launching SERI 2008 took place in the very heart of the Salons Boffrand (Reception Rooms) in the Great Presidential Hall of the Senate, in two parts.

The first part was taken up by Mister François-Denis Poitrinal, Chairman of Fondamental Expo, who recounted the history of the Salon as well as its privileged position within the fields of research and innovation. After that, Professor Jean Audouze, President of the Scientific Committee, followed the advance of science back through time before making a succinct presentation of the provisional scientific programme that had been discussed on the occasion of the first working meeting held by the Scientific Committee on the 18th October 2007.

Finally, Ms Catherine Gautier de La Plaine, the General Commissioner, made a presentation regarding the Exhibition and its prospects for development over the months to come. “The SERI is an unique annual gathering in Europe for all those involved in research and innovation. Above all, it is the show window for European science and technology. First and foremost, The SERI is a professional exhibition, also aimed at disseminating scientific culture. In the three years since its inception, the Exhibition has become an unique communication tool, making it possible for every participating entity to present the totality of his/her/its discoveries and work done in research and innovation.”

The second part took place in the shape of a round table with the theme "How does one pass on scientific knowledge?” a subject which continues to be one of the foundation stones of the Exhibition.

This debate was orchestrated by Mister Michel Claessens, Chief Deputy of the Communications Unit of the General Director of Research of the European Commission, by Mister Philippe Carli, Chairman of Siemens France, by Mister Laurent Buisson, Director for Innovative Services and Regional Activity at the Ministry for Higher Education and Research, and by Mister Jean Audouze, in his capacity as researcher in astrophysics, Director of Research at CNRS [= French National Centre for Scientific Research]. • 8th March 2007, Official Presentation of the 3rd Exhibition in the presence of Mr François Goulard, Minister with responsibility for Research, and of Mr Arnold Migus, director general of the CNRS  (National Scientific Research Centre).

invités au Sénat

Mr François Goulard, Minister with responsibility for Research gave his view of the Exhibition:
1/ The European Research and Innovation Exhibition has become a major event for research and innovation in France and in Europe, both for major industrial companies and for innovative SMEs.
2/ The European Research and Innovation Exhibition is very important for developing in our citizens an interest in research, for encouraging young people to become engineers or researchers, for bringing closer together the worlds of research and business and for supporting practical applications of innovation.
3/ Basic research must be encouraged and the space and freedom provided for original and daring initiatives. With this aim, the exhibition will include a particular focus on financing innovation and strategies for the direct or indirect application of patents.

In the opinion of Mr Arnold Migus, Director-General of the CNRS (National Scientific Research Centre):
The Exhibition is a major event that supports the lead we are taking. The CNRS has its rightful place in the European Research and Innovation Exhibition: it shares the same ambitions, in particular as regards technological progress and the strategy of growth, industrial property patents and the fight against fraudulent imitation.
